ABOUT

My personal projects typically focus on realism, incorporating gestural mark-making within abstracted backgrounds. I enjoy exploring themes such as liminal spaces, learning and unlearning, motivation, the balance within nature, zoology, and human emotions and psychology. My preferred medium is acrylic on canvas, which allows the materiality of the paint to build visual narratives. I also appreciate exploring new mediums and experimenting with different techniques.

During my Inquiry I coursework, I encountered Rita Irwin’s writing on a/r/tography-based research. She describes the process as “art-making in any art form and writing not separate or illustrative of each other but interconnected and woven through each other to create additional and/or enhanced meanings” (R. Irwin). Similarly, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s philosophy of learning and education, known as “The Rhizome,” compares rhizomatic plants to an educational system where structures continuously grow underground and send up new shoots in an interconnected, never-separate system. These in-between spaces in my artistic practice, educational career, volunteer experience, and hobbies are all interconnected, creating a rich understanding of growth, community, and learning.

When I am not in my art studio or teaching,

For leisure, I can be found fishing and hiking on local rivers with my Shiloh Shepherds.
